With equity and bond markets both retracing for the quarter, the Lonsec Multi-Asset portfolios delivered negative absolute returns, however they delivered strong relative performance, outperforming the peer group over the quarter and for the 12 months to September. Our focus on quality investments and diversification supported portfolio performance as volatility returned to markets.

Deanne Baker explains how the Multi-Asset portfolios performed over the September quarter.

The Retirement portfolios maintain a slight defensive bias. The business cycle is entering a more challenging period, with tighter financial conditions and softening consumer trends presenting headwinds for growth assets in particular. We have been increasing duration within the portfolio.

Despite the market sell-off in September, rolling year portfolio returns remain positive, and ahead of the Benchmark, for Lonsec’s Listed Managed Portfolios, which is good to see after a difficult 2022, with portfolio returns ranging from 5.9% in the Conservative profile to 12% for the High Growth portfolio.

Portfolio Manager for the Listed portfolios Dan Moradi provides a quarterly update, covering the latest performance, positioning, and outlook.

The past decade has seen enormous growth in the number of sustainable investment products, with many advisers and their clients looking for guidance on how to evaluate these funds’ objectives and holdings. Since the launch of the Lonsec Sustainability Report in 2020, many advisers and their clients have used the reports to help shape their portfolios. As the market has evolved, we want our reports to reflect best practice so they can continue to provide value to investors.

Watch Lorraine Robinson, Executive Director – Lonsec Research, present highlights from the report at the Lonsec Symposium in Sydney earlier this year.

Important information: Any express or implied rating or advice is limited to general advice, it doesn’t consider any personal needs, goals or objectives. Obtain and consider the Product Disclosure Statement for each financial product and seek professional personal advice before making any decisions regarding a financial product.

Overall, 2022 was a year to forget for both equity and bond investors, with both asset classes generating negative returns over the calendar year. In fact, aside from commodities and the USD, almost all other major asset classes generated negative returns over the year. In line with the broader market, Lonsec’s Listed Managed Portfolios generated negative returns over the calendar year for the first time since 2011. The declines were broad-based, led by global property and domestic property, while both domestic and global bonds also recorded double-digit falls.

Despite the negative returns over the calendar year of 2022, Australian Equities outperformed Global Equities by a wide margin with the latter being a negative contributor over the year, but the portfolio impact from Global Equities was curbed by reducing allocation to the sector to “Slightly Underweight” in October, as well as the March introduction of the VVLU ETF, which outperformed significantly for the rest of the year.

Portfolio Manager for the Listed portfolios Dan Moradi provides an update covering performance, positioning and outlook.

It has been another challenging quarter for multi-asset investors with both equity and bond markets for the most part continuing their declines. High inflation prints, aggressive central bank policy tightening, and fears of recession are driving extreme market volatility.  However, the Retirement portfolios have weathered the storm relatively well. Whilst we haven’t been able to protect investors from all the losses, the portfolios managed to outperform the peer group benchmark and internal benchmark and remain well ahead on a relative basis over the 12 months to 30 September 2022.

While the portfolios’ capital component of returns has been volatile, the yield component has continued to deliver a level of stability for retirees. From an income perspective, the portfolio has delivered in excess of the 4% income target through the cycle (3-5 years).  Pleasingly, income was sourced from a wide range of strategies and asset classes, from equities to infrastructure, emerging market debt, and option premia.

Lonsec’s Head of Sustainable Investment Research explains how Lonsec reviews the ESG capabilities of Fund Managers. This webinar explains the core elements of the Lonsec review process for ESG, how it is used in our overall rating, and how it differs from our Sustainability Score.

Tony Adams

Head of Sustainable Investment Research, Lonsec

Tony joined Lonsec in March 2019 and is responsible for the ESG assessment of funds across all sectors and as well broad oversight of the assessment of sustainable, ethical, ESG and impact capabilities across managers. He is responsible for Lonsec’s sustainability reporting framework (Lonsec’s BEE’s) for funds.

Prior to joining Lonsec, Tony has had 30 years’ experience in global fixed interest markets, most recently as Head of Global Fixed Interest and Credit at Colonial First State Global Asset Management, where he developed the firm’s global credit capability and oversaw the implementation of ESG across portfolios.

Lonsec Research chatted with leading Fixed Income Managers to learn more about the sector, how they are approaching the changing investment landscape and what drew them to this sometimes overlooked, but very important, sector.

In this video, Isrin Khor, Lonsec Sector Manager of Fixed Income is joined by Anthony Kirkham, Head of Melbourne Operations and Investment Management/Portfolio Manager at Western Asset Management, and Sachin Gupta, Managing Director and Head of the Global Desk at PIMCO. The discussion focuses on the key qualitative strengths of PIMCO and Western Asset, particularly on business, people, and the process followed by a market outlook discussion.
