The Multi-Asset portfolios returned solid absolute returns over the December quarter in the order of 3.9% to 5.2% depending on the risk profile. In a relative sense, while the Conservative and Defensive portfolios outperformed their respective FE peer group benchmarks, the Balanced, Growth and High Growth risk profiles struggled to keep pace. The embedded risk control elements within these portfolios lagged in an environment driven by strong risk sentiment rather than changing fundamentals.

Deanne Baker explains how the Multi-Asset portfolios performed over the December quarter.

With equity and bond markets both retracing for the quarter, the Lonsec Multi-Asset portfolios delivered negative absolute returns, however they delivered strong relative performance, outperforming the peer group over the quarter and for the 12 months to September. Our focus on quality investments and diversification supported portfolio performance as volatility returned to markets.

Deanne Baker explains how the Multi-Asset portfolios performed over the September quarter.

Over the 12 months to June 30, the portfolios delivered solid absolute returns. This very respectable result masked significant intra-year volatility. The 2023 financial year was characterised by raging inflation, the most aggressive rate rises in history, the re-pricing of all major asset classes, significant shifts in style from growth to value (and back again), and a strong shift in investor sentiment on the back of the buzz generated by artificial intelligence.

Deanne Baker explains how the Multi-Asset portfolios performed over the June quarter.

The Multi-Asset portfolios outperformed their peer group benchmarks over the 12-month period to March 2023. The Multi-Asset portfolios have provided good protection from the volatility experienced in equity and bond markets over the last 12 months, while broadly keeping pace with markets as sentiment recovered over the first quarter of 2023. Key to that outperformance has been our relatively high exposure to alternative assets which has provided stability to the portfolio.

Deanne Baker explains how the Multi-Asset portfolios performed over the March quarter and how they are positioned to navigate through the current volatility.

Despite a difficult year, the Multi-Asset portfolios have managed to outperform both the internal strategic benchmark and the peer group average benchmark. Active management, Dynamic asset allocation (DAA) and lowly correlated sources of return have meant that the portfolios have been able to navigate the volatile markets relatively well. The slightly underweight position in Global Equities and Emerging Markets detracted a small amount of value however our decision to neutralise our underweight position in Fixed Income the previous quarter proved timely, and we added value there. infrastructure.

Late in the quarter, we removed our long-stranding underweight position in Australian Fixed Income back to neutral given the significant rises we have already seen in bond yields over the course of the year. While further volatility can be expected, Australian fixed-income securities are now offering better value than they have in several years and are once again able to play that defensive role in multi-asset portfolios.

Deanne Baker explains how the Multi-Asset portfolios performed over the September quarter and how they are positioned to navigate through the current volatility.

It has been a challenging period for multi-asset investors with both equity and bond markets recording some of the worse starts to a year in decades. Global equity markets fell significantly over the quarter and domestically the ASX 300 index has fallen more than 10% since the start of the calendar year. However, what has been most damaging to balanced portfolios has been the significant losses experienced in the bond markets. Bond market indices are down 10%, as persistent and high inflation has seen bond yields rise sharply. The defensive part of many investor portfolios failed when it was needed most.

Deanne Baker explains how the Multi-Asset portfolios are positioned to best navigate through the current challenging environment.

Quarterly Update – Q1 2022

From a portfolio perspective, geopolitical risks, such as the current Russia/Ukraine conflict, are typically hard to position for. What we tend to see is that the market tends to respond sharply and then recover quite quickly thereafter. And that appears to be the case this time around.  The Australian equity market has advanced over the quarter and has now more than recovered the initial losses suffered upon the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Whilst it may be difficult to prepare for the event itself, we can position our portfolios for the likely consequences of these events, in this case the risk of higher inflation and higher volatility. Deanne Baker explains why our Multi-Asset portfolios have been well-positioned for these risks.
